HHS Gets It Right!

The Department of Health and Human Services has published a draft strategic plan for 2018-2022 that takes a dramatic shift from administrations past. The plan says it “accomplishes its mission through programs and initiatives that cover a wide spectrum of activities, serving and protecting Americans at every stage of life, beginning at conception.” [Emphasis added.] Previous HHS plans had similar language but did not include the “beginning at conception” phrase. The proposed mission statement would also seem to set the department against assisted suicide: “A core component of the HHS mission is our dedication to serve all Americans from conception to natural death, but especially those individuals and populations facing or at high risk for economic and social well-being challenges, through effective human services.” The health department publishes its strategic plan every four years, and this one would run from 2018 to 2022. Public comments to the department on the draft ended October 27. But, it’s not too late to send a postcard or email thanking the department for recognizing the value of all human life.
